CRUISE AROUND SOUTHERN NORWAY AND FIORDS ONBOARD SILVERSEA'S SILVER DAWN

In July Mandy sailed onboard Silversea’s Silver Dawn through the Fiords of southern Norway. Departing from Copenhagen and returning to Copenhagen 11 days later.

Before I share my cruise, I must tell you about the ship. Silver Dawn is just over a year old, an exquisite masterpiece that embodies luxury and elegance at its finest. This remarkable vessel combines sleek design with state-of-the-art amenities, offering an unforgettable voyage. From the moment we stepped on board, we were greeted by a warm and welcoming atmosphere, as the attentive crew ensured our every need was met with a smile. The Silver Dawn's spacious suites are meticulously designed, providing a sanctuary of comfort and tranquillity. We indulged in world-class cuisine, where expert chefs create culinary delights that tantalize the taste buds.

I must also mention S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste), which is a groundbreaking concept introduced onboard Silversea's Silver Dawn, designed to immerse guests in the authentic flavours and culinary traditions of the destinations they visit. From interactive cooking demonstrations to local food and wine tastings, S.A.L.T. offers a unique gastronomic journey that allows guests to delve into the rich cultural heritage of each port of call, elevating the dining experience to new heights. From the S.A.L.T. Restaurant and incredible Bar to the S.A.L.T. cooking classes and adventures out shopping with the S.A.L.T. chef, I had a wonderful experience experiencing Scandinavian cuisine.

BERGEN

First port of call after a full sea day was Bergen. Bergen is a charming city nestled amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Norway. Known for its picturesque beauty, Bergen is a true gem that captivates visitors with its stunning fjords, majestic mountains, and colourful wooden houses. This vibrant city offered a delightful blend of history, culture, and nature. We took a stroll through the UNESCO-listed Bryggen wharf, where you can admire the iconic Hanseatic buildings that have stood the test of time. We visited the Bergenhus Fortress and explored some of the captivating art galleries. For outdoor enthusiasts, Bergen offers an abundance of thrilling activities, such as hiking in the surrounding mountains or taking a scenic boat tour along the fjords. We enjoyed a ride on the Bergen cable car, also known as the Ulriken cable car. It was a unique and thrilling way to experience the breathtaking views of the city and its surroundings. The cable car takes you to the top of Mount Ulriken, the highest of the seven mountains that surround Bergen. As you ascend, you're treated to panoramic vistas of the cityscape, the fjords, and the surrounding mountains. Once at the top, you can enjoy the stunning scenery, go for a hike, or relax at the mountain's restaurant and observation deck. The cable car is not only a means of transportation but also an adventure in itself, as you glide up the mountain in a comfortable and modern cabin. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a photography lover, or simply looking for a memorable experience, the Bergen cable car is a must-visit attraction that will leave you in awe of Norway's natural beauty.

FLAM

Our next port of call was Flam. Flam is a magical village tucked away in the heart of Norway's fjord country. Nestled at the end of the Aurlandsfjord, Flam offers a truly enchanting experience for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. The village is famous for its iconic Flam Railway, considered one of the world's most scenic train journeys. We embarked on this breathtaking ride, and were treated to awe-inspiring views of steep mountains, cascading waterfalls, and lush valleys.

The train stopped at the Kjosfossen Waterfall, which is the source for the small power station that is used to power the Flam railway. We disembarked and looking out of over the waterfall haunting music seemed to come from the surrounding mountain and a Nymph was viewed dancing high in the rocks. For those seeking outdoor thrills, Flam is the perfect gateway to explore the surrounding fjords and mountains through hiking, biking, or even kayaking. The village itself exudes charm, with its picturesque wooden houses and friendly locals. Whether you're immersing yourself in the natural wonders or soaking in the peaceful ambiance of the village, Flam is a destination that promises an unforgettable experience for all who visit.

OLDEN

We then sailed to a small village called Olden. Olden is located in the western part of Norway, known for its picturesque beauty and close proximity to stunning natural landscapes. Nestled at the end of the Nordfjord, Olden is surrounded by towering mountains, glittering glaciers, and crystal-clear fjords. The village itself exudes a charming and tranquil atmosphere, with its wooden houses, colourful gardens, and a sense of history that can be felt in every corner. Olden is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers, as it serves as a gateway to some of Norway's most iconic attractions, such as the Briksdal Glacier and the Jostedalsbreen National Park. Visitors can embark on scenic hikes, take boat trips on the fjord, or simply immerse themselves in the serene surroundings. With its untouched beauty and a rich cultural heritage, Olden offers a glimpse into the natural wonders and traditional Norwegian way of life.

We took a journey on the Loen Sky lift cable car in Olden which is a thrilling and unforgettable experience that allows visitors to soak in the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding landscape. Located just a short distance from Olden, the cable car takes passengers on a scenic journey up Mount Hoven, offering panoramic views of the fjord, mountains, and glaciers. Once you reach the summit, you are greeted with a spectacular panorama that stretches as far as the eye can see. The fjord sparkles below, framed by majestic mountains and glistening glaciers. It's a sight that will leave you in awe of the natural wonders that surround you. At the top of Mount Hoven, there is also a restaurant and viewing platform where you can relax and take in the scenery at your leisure. Whether you choose to enjoy a delicious meal or simply sit back and absorb the serenity of the surroundings, the Loen Sky lift cable car offers a unique and unforgettable experience in the heart of Olden.

GEIRANGER

Sailing through the incredible fiords we then headed to Geiranger. Geiranger is a picturesque village nestled in the heart of the Norwegian fjords, renowned for its stunning natural beauty and UNESCO World Heritage status. Surrounded by towering mountains, cascading waterfalls, and crystal-clear fjords, Geiranger offers a truly magical experience for visitors. One of the most iconic attractions in Geiranger is the Geirangerfjord, often referred to as the "jewel of the fjords." This deep blue fjord stretches for 15 kilometres and is flanked by steep cliffs and lush greenery, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring landscape.

We took an incredible, daring bus journey to the top of Mount Dalsnibba where a skywalk gives you a breathtaking view of Geiranger and the surrounding mountains. At 1500 metres above sea level there was still snow, and floating in the lake near the summit were two small icebergs. The journey isn’t for those who fear heights. We journeyed down the mountain and across to another to view The Seven Sisters waterfall, which is another must-see sight in Geiranger. This magnificent waterfall consists of seven separate streams cascading down the mountainside, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. Nearby, you can also find the Bridal Veil waterfall, which complements the beauty of the Seven Sisters. We enjoyed a closer view of both when we departed Geiranger, and the captain stopped below both and turned 360 degrees allowing for all passengers to experience the amazing scenery.

For those seeking adventure, Geiranger offers a range of activities to get your adrenaline pumping. From kayaking and canoeing on the fjord to hiking along the scenic trails, there are plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in the natural wonders of the area. In the village of Geiranger, you'll find charming wooden houses, local shops, and restaurants serving delicious Norwegian cuisine. The friendly locals and warm hospitality add to the overall charm of this quaint village.

ARENDAL

After a full day and night of sailing we arrived at Arendal.  Arendal is a charming coastal town located in southern Norway, known for its rich maritime history and beautiful archipelago. Nestled between the sea and scenic landscapes, Arendal offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural attractions, and a vibrant waterfront atmosphere. The town's historic centre, Tyholmen, is a delight to explore with its cobblestone streets, colourful wooden houses, and picturesque harbour. We wandered through narrow alleys, and enjoyed the waterfront cafes that offer stunning views of the sea.

Arendal's maritime heritage is evident in its numerous maritime museums, such as the Arendal Maritime Museum and the Merdøgaard Museum. These museums offer insights into the town's seafaring past, showcasing artifacts and exhibits that highlight the importance of shipping and trade in the region. With over 800 islands and islets, the archipelago offers endless opportunities for boating, fishing, and exploring secluded beaches.

You can take a boat trip to the nearby island of Merdø, which is a car-free oasis with picturesque landscapes and historic buildings. In addition to its natural and cultural attractions, Arendal boasts a thriving dining scene. From seafood restaurants serving freshly caught delicacies to cozy cafes offering local treats, there is something to satisfy every palate. Overall, Arendal is a destination that offers a perfect blend of history, natural beauty, and maritime charm. Whether you're exploring its historic streets, venturing out to the archipelago, or indulging in local cuisine, Arendal promises a memorable experience for all who visit. Departing Arendal in the afternoon was stunning as we sailed through some of the islands, heading out of the inlet and onwards to the sea.

OSLO

Our final port of call in Norway was Oslo. Oslo, the capital city of Norway, is a vibrant and cosmopolitan metropolis that effortlessly combines modernity with rich historical and cultural heritage. Set against a backdrop of stunning natural beauty, with its location by the Oslofjord and surrounded by lush forests, Oslo offers a unique blend of urban attractions and outdoor adventures. One of the city's most iconic landmarks is the Oslo Opera House, a stunning architectural masterpiece that sits majestically by the waterfront. Visitors can explore its sleek design, walk up its sloping roof for panoramic views, or catch a world-class opera or ballet performance inside. For history enthusiasts, the Viking Ship Museum is a must-visit. Here, you can marvel at remarkably well-preserved Viking ships, as well as other artifacts from the Viking Age. The nearby open-air Norwegian Folk Museum provides a glimpse into the country's rural past with its collection of historic buildings and exhibitions. Oslo is also home to a vibrant arts and cultural scene. The National Gallery houses an extensive collection of Norwegian and international art, including works by Edvard Munch, Norway's most renowned artist. The contemporary art scene is thriving as well, with a variety of galleries and art spaces showcasing the works of both emerging and established artists.

Nature lovers will find plenty to explore in Oslo's surrounding areas. The city is surrounded by forests, hills, and lakes, providing ample opportunities for hiking, biking, and winter sports. The nearby Holmenkollen ski jump, with its panoramic views of the city, is a popular attraction for both sports enthusiasts and sightseers. Oslo is also a food lover's paradise, with a burgeoning culinary scene that offers everything from traditional Norwegian cuisine to international flavours. The city's diverse neighbourhoods are filled with trendy cafes, innovative restaurants, and lively food markets where you can sample local delicacies and international treats.

With its combination of stunning natural landscapes, cultural treasures, and a vibrant city life, Oslo offers a truly unique and unforgettable experience for visitors. Whether you're exploring its historical sites, immersing yourself in its cultural offerings, or simply enjoying the stunning scenery, Oslo is a destination that caters to all interests and promises an enriching and memorable stay.

COPENHAGEN

Departing our cruise back in Copenhagen we stayed on and enjoyed a few days exploring Denmark’s capital.  We enjoyed a canal tour and a seaplane flight over the city, along with many hours of wandering the streets. Copenhagen is a charming and picturesque destination that seamlessly blends old-world charm with modern sophistication. Known for its beautiful canals, colourful houses, and friendly atmosphere, Copenhagen offers a unique and welcoming experience to visitors.

One of the city's most famous landmarks is the iconic Nyhavn waterfront. Here, you can stroll along the picturesque canal, lined with brightly coloured 17th-century townhouses, and enjoy the lively atmosphere of the restaurants, cafes, and bars that dot the area. The nearby Amalienborg Palace, the official residence of the Danish royal family, is another must-visit attraction. You can witness the changing of the guard ceremony and explore the stunning palace grounds.  Of course the most famouse landmark of Copenhagen is the Little Mermaid, she may be small, but she is visited by thousands daily.

Copenhagen is also renowned for its world-class museums and cultural institutions. The National Museum of Denmark showcases the country's rich history and heritage through its extensive collection of artifacts and exhibitions. The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek houses an impressive collection of art, including works by renowned artists such as Van Gogh, Monet, and Rodin. The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, located just outside the city, is a haven for contemporary art enthusiasts, with its stunning coastal location and thought-provoking exhibitions.

The city is also known for its commitment to sustainability and green living. Copenhagen is a cyclist's paradise, with its extensive network of bike lanes and rental options, allowing visitors to explore the city on two wheels. The Tivoli Gardens, one of the oldest amusement parks in the world, offers a delightful escape with its beautiful gardens, thrilling rides, and enchanting atmosphere. I wasn’t one to miss out on this experience and ventured on a couple of thrilling rides.

Copenhagen's food scene is another highlight, with a wide range of culinary delights to savour. The city boasts numerous Michelin-starred restaurants, as well as trendy food markets, street food stalls, and cozy cafes. Don't miss out on trying traditional Danish pastries, such as the famous cinnamon rolls or "smørrebrød," open-faced sandwiches that are a staple of Danish cuisine. Along with the smorrebrod, which we enjoyed for lunches, I loved their cinnamon and cardamon rolls at Fisk (coffee time).

With its blend of historical charm, vibrant cultural scene, commitment to sustainability, and delicious cuisine, Copenhagen is a city that captivates and delights visitors. Whether you're exploring its historic sites, immersing yourself in its cultural offerings, or simply enjoying the laid-back atmosphere, Copenhagen offers an unforgettable experience that will leave you wanting to return again and again.
