Cruising the Med
(a Christmas cruise shared by Ruffy Calder)
What to do for Christmas with family and friends in Europe?
A great option is to Cruise the Mediterranean – unpack once, entertainment and food readily available and the opportunity to visit & experience different cities.
Cruising still has it mystic and eliteness which 20/25 years ago flying Business Class had that air of being special.
Our cruise started from Civitavecchia (Rome). Arriving the day before our trip started was an easy way into it. We had a good look around the major sites of Rome and being Christmas was special with the lights and trees in full volume then trained out to the port to meet the boat.
Getting our first look at MSC Preziosa was impressive – it was an enormous 333m in length, tidy and very efficient. The rooms are a generous size with a lovely balcony.
Our tour consisted of visiting Palermo (Sicily), Valletta (Malta), Barcelona (Spain), Marseille (France), Genoa (Italy) and return to Rome.
Daily organised excursions (get in quick) or a solo wander about these cities, which we followed the local map to areas we wanted to visit. We would return for a late lunch then chill out on the top deck in the many spa pools available.
The weather this time of the year is warm blue skies (18C) so shorts worn during the daytime isn’t a hassle.
You do have the ‘buffet’ options on board which we took advantage of for breakfast and most lunches due to its longer and flexible time slots.
Dinner we always made an occasion and you dressed as if going out to a nice restaurant in any City, which in effect you are doing. The menu was varied and the options were wide and if you didn’t like it or were still hungry you could order again.
A thoroughly enjoyable experience, even with 5000+ people on-board you still retained your space and ease to move about and enjoy all the ships amenities.
And yes there was that token visit to the gym on Day one.
